In Memorium - Irene Takei Miura '60

Irene T. Miura, a great friend of Cal, Cal Spirit and the California Alumni Association, died the other day. Having first met her about 15 years ago, I always admired her grace, wisdom and generosity.

Her vast contributions included serving as President of CAA from 1997-99 (and only the second woman in CAA's long existence) and served two terms as the UC Alumni Regent (1998-99 and 2000-01). She was also the Head Pom Pom Girl during her years at Cal.

I attended a barbeque last year with friends just before football season started and was fortunate to sit with her and her husband Neal '60. She recounted the times when the football cheering section was still segregated by gender, and how difficult it was to integrate the two (the police were used to force the integration that first year).

I will miss her smiling face at basketball games. Thank you, Irene, for all that you did.
